Location Rating: T-C-x
Located just north of the downtown area on US 79, it is across from Union Pacific's
former SP line from Corsicana to Flatonia, and north of the junction of that line
with the UP's former MP line from Texarkana to Austin. Views from the rooms are
limited, but you can see the trains from the upstairs rooms.
Hearne is a busy junction and crew change point, and the UP crews stay over at the
Oak Tree Inn. There is a lounge in the motel for their use and the crew vans pick
them up in front of the motel. Valuable railfan information can be gathered if
friendly crew members are encountered out front waiting for their van rides.
The rooms are modern and clean, with cable TV and laundry service also available.
I'm afraid I can't recommend the adjacent '50s style diner, however. Our initial
menu choices were unavailable, and the items we ended up ordering arrived poorly
cooked (and believe me, it's hard to mess up a hamburger and fries!) Hearne is
also not much of a town, but there is a McDonalds for the fast food fiends, and
several questionable looking Mexican restaurants on US 190 west of downtown.
