The INN at The Dalles is a railfan's dream location, I stayed there last September for a couple nights.

The Inn at The Dalles on the east end of The Dalles OR, has a excellent view of the UP and the BNSF on the other side of the river. I have stayed in rooms #23 and #24 and both have great views of both tracks and the river and the also the Dalles dam. The rooms were clean and had huge picture windows looking over the tracks and the river. The cost was $55 a night. I highly recommend this place.

Basic, clean room, good views should be possible from all rooms parallel to road. I didn’t worry as all, before checking in I noticed there was the easy access for photography to the UP main line from Portland, OR to Spokane, WA (very busy) by walking across the road (W 2nd St ) to a public parking lot next to US Postal depot. In the distance you can also see the BNSF on the northern bank of the Columbia River.
