The Motel is within very easy walking distance of the depot area of Chama on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad. I've stayed there on two occasions 1990 and 1994. You can hear the sound of the steam locos moving around in the morning and stay at the depot until late.

the best stay in town is the Chama Station Inn; about a block north of the HOTEL. It has more rooms, and is right across the street from the engine house. It has free breakfast in the dining room, which looks out on the engine house and yard, so you may watch the trains getting made up while having your complimentary breakfast each morning. I have stayed here many times, it is better for the entire family. I'd call it a T - B - 2, as most rooms overlook the tracks but a few do not. All of the downstairs rooms can see out to the Railroad property, plus there is a covered patio where you can sit in the shade and enjoy the ambiance.

The best steak in town is across the street at Foster's; an 1881 built original Hotel and Restaurant, that has not really been updated, some rooms have no bath, and the bar is open til 2am, not bad for single men or younger couples, but not really family. The restaurant is right behind the bar and enters on the side street. The menu has many home-made New Mexico Favorites, as well as regular American comfort food. Good Steaks, great enchilada's and big breakfasts, it is really my base of operations when in town. I personally swear by both of these places.
