Step off the Zephyr and into a beautifully restored ex-DR&G depot complete with a railroad museum. The Amtrak staff is the best you’ll find anywhere on the system. Walk up the stairs, across the street and into the lobby of the unique Hotel Denver. Great base of operations for the serious rail fan or foamer wanting to keep their significant other happy. Front rooms have great view of tracks. This property comes complete with brew pub with great food and several high quality shops, be sure to see the rare mother- of- pearl train on the east wall. Visit the locals and ask about the railroad history. Get a cup of great Java and fresh pastry at the Maple Table. Ride the tram and get a large view of U.P. yard and mainline. Rent a bike or walk the trail through Glenwood Canyon. Treat yourself to a steam and massage at the Vapor Caves like the Native Americans who discovered them did. Have a great meal in town or across the river at the historic Hotel Colorado like Teddy Roosevelt, Al Capone, or President Taft did. Go back to your room, have a comfortable nights rest sightsee the next day until your train stops to pick you up in the afternoon (east bounders, not to worry as the train is generally 2 to 6 hours late). Bore your fellow train riders to death regaling them with your story of the best 24hrs. you spent on yourself in recent memory.
