It takes a certain type to love this intimate and historic 1904 hotel. The 5 rooms are small with a choice of a double bed or two singles. The linens have a 1970's vibe but are clean and in decent shape. There are 2-shared bathrooms that are tidy and basic with a shower. The rooms open up to the main space that is furnished with mismatched sofas and misc. antiques. If you rent out all of the rooms with a group of friends it is a great place to hang out. If you are on your own, hope that your neighbors are considerate and quiet because the doors are thin and sounds from the main room carry into the individual rooms. A basic breakfast of scrambled eggs, an English muffin & coffee from The Whistle Stop was included in the cost of the room. If the hotel doesn't sound private enough, there are 4 tent cabins also available to rent just beyond the hotel. So what are the pros? There must be some if we return every year.

Great views from room #1 and the front porch overlooking the vast Ivanpah Valley ringed with spectacular mountain ranges and because the Union Pacific Railway's main line is 200 feet away. Rooms 2-5 do not have a view of the tracks. There are 3 outdoor spas that are perfect for stargazing and train watching. You can watch the trains do an curving approach across the vast Ivanpah Valley, the “longest, steepest grade” as an UP engineer told me.

By the way they have added two jacussi, and a RV and camping area. This place is in the Ivanpah Valley overlooking the UP track that passes through Las Vegas. The views are fantastic but I recommend going in the spring or fall as it gets HOT (120F) in the summer. I was there in Sept. and it was a cool 89. Also, the place is just of the outside on the Joshua Tree National Forest. Within easy driving distance is I-15, BNSF at Needles, and more. A real interesting place.
