Most rooms at the well-named Budget Inn have no view of trains, though you can hear them in distance. Room 211 has the ultimate view of all trackside views. Union Pacific trains run almost non-stop to the north, and the high desert scenery is great. You really must specify Room 211.

I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Barstow and was delighted at the trainwatching. It is located on a hill above the hump yard. From the end of the hallway you can see the hump release, retarder, and classification tracks aong with the main yard and the mainline through tracks. An immense amount of action. I got the wrong room, however, and I reccomend the northwest corner room for the best view. No rooms face the yard directly but standing at the top of the stairs outside is magnificent.

The best rooms are on the 3rd floor in the back. Its a very nice hotel, but a bit pricely($90/ night). I felt it was the best view in town and the trains rolled by every 10 to 20 minutes or less in the busy time. I drove 100 miles out of my way to stay there a second time

I stayed in Barstow at the other Holiday Inn on E Main. From my third floor window, I could look down on the main line, about 70 feet away. Excellent view, I just sat by the window and watch the traffic roll by. I could even get out of the pool and walk over to the wall and watch the trains. And it wasn't noisy, the engines aren't throttled up yet at this point. I watched the hump action from the yard entrance. Just by the sign there is a little turnout where we parked. The hump was to the left and the bowl was spread out directly in front of us. I found out that hump operations are far and away the LOUDEST thing at a yard.
