Riverview Motel

Highway 63 S
Mammoth Spring, AR 72554

Location Rating: T-A-x

I recently stayed at this location and it was perfect for railfanning with great views. I stayed in room 128 on the second floor and took this photo from the balcony of my room.

It is kind of like the Izaak Walton of the Ozarks. It is just south of Mammoth Spring over looking the Spring River. The BNSF Thayer Sub runs between the motel and the river with the motel being up on a hillside. Wonderful views from the second floor rooms which are bigger and have a balcony on the back of the second floor.

The Thayer sub as in excess of Thirty trains a day with Monday and Tuesdays being the slow days. Trains range from hot intermodal Z trains to merchandise with unit coal, grain, coil steel trains. About 50% percent of the traffic is coal trains. Most are now 135 car trains with DPU in a three/two combination. There are also conventional 115 car coal trains with three BigMac's. Conventional coal and grain trains have helpers from Springfield to just north of Thayer.

A combination of the beauty of the Ozarks Mountains between Springfield and Thayer and then the Spring River from Thayer south to Blackrock, Ar. makes this one of the best photogenic railfan locations between the Appalachians and the Rockies.
